Susan retired from clinical practice in 2019 after 37 years of full-time practice in the NHS.

For 22 of those years, she practiced as a consultant neurologist with a special interest in epilepsy, first in the Greater Manchester Neuroscience Centre and then in the Department for Clinical Neurosciences in Edinburgh.

She continues to be research active, and was the principal investigator of the Scottish Epilepsy Deaths Study. Her current research centres around prevention of premature death in epilepsy and screening for depression, anxiety and suicidality in people with epilepsy.
