This is a full-day course designed for people caring for someone with epilepsy who has been prescribed emergency midazolam. This course covers all the necessary information from the understanding epilepsy course and then looks at the best practice techniques for delivering buccal and nasal midazolam.
This course adheres to the best practice guidelines for training professional carers in the administration of Buccal (oromucosal) Midazolam for the treatment of prolonged and/or clusters of seizures in the community, provided by the Epilepsy Specialist Nurses Association (ESNA) and endorsed by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
Morning session (understanding epilepsy):
- Causes of epilepsy
- Differential diagnosis
- Types of epileptic seizures (epilepsy symptoms and signs of epilepsy)
- Seizure Triggers
- Treatment
- Implications of epilepsy
- First aid guidance for managing seizures
- Emergencies and when to call 999
Afternoon session (administration of Midazolam):
This part of the course will help you understand the principles and safety aspects which relate to the administration of emergency midazolam, using both the buccal and nasal routes.
You will learn how to act within the guidelines of the individual care plan/protocol. You will be shown the practical procedure of administering these medications.
This course is assessed and will certify the individual as having:
- a good basic understanding of what epilepsy is
- awareness of the more common types of epilepsy
- an understanding of first aid guidelines for seizures including the appropriate use of emergency medication
- the practical procedure of administering buccal/nasal Midazolam
- an awareness of the legal and practical implications of administering emergency medication
This course is certificated and valid for 2 years.
