Understanding epilepsy – Morning session 10am until 1pm
The course will provide you with knowledge and a clear perspective of understanding and managing difficult epilepsy. The course includes information on:
- common types of seizures
- diagnostic process
- treatment for epilepsy
- first aid for seizures
- how epilepsy can affect the person, family, friends, carers, and the wider community
- how to administer emergency medication
Administration of Midazolam – Afternoon session 2pm until 4pm
The afternoon session will help you understand the principles and safety aspects which relate to the administration of emergency medications such as buccal/nasal midazolam, and rectal diazepam/paraldehyde (on request).
You will learn how to act within the guidelines of the individual care plan/protocol. You will be shown the practical procedure of administering these medications.
This course is assessed and will certify the individual as having:
- a good basic understanding of what epilepsy is and how it is treated
- awareness of the more common types of epilepsy
- an understanding of first aid guidelines for seizures including the appropriate use of emergency medication
- the practical procedure of administering buccal midazolam
- an awareness of the legal and practical implications of administering emergency medication
- an awareness of the implications of the use of buccal and nasal midazolam
