Chris shares his story of being diagnosed with epilepsy and how Epilepsy Scotland’s Youth Group has helped him.
I was 13 when I was first diagnosed. I have focal seizures and full-time seizures time to time but I get on and go to college, so it’s not too difficult.
When first diagnosed I was put back a year at high school which was horrible.
I was left with short-term memory issues which gives me new and difficult problems to deal with on a daily basis.
I was told about the Youth Group through my high-school and had regular sessions in school and went down to Epilepsy Scotland for other groups.
The groups where extremely helpful and they where I met a lot of fun and friendly people who I could talk to about my epilepsy which isn’t something I could do anywhere else.
How the youth service helped me
The Youth Service gave me a lot of inner peace and it was a place where my epilepsy could come out rather than sit inside me and stir and that is something that caused seizures, so Epilepsy Scotland saved me from a whole lot of pain.
I changed with Epilepsy Scotland, so if it wasn’t for them I could still be a person who’s thoughts brought him down but I got through that with Epilepsy Scotland and so much more.
The support I got helped me understand other people’s epilepsy and it did that through the groups we had.
I would say if you feel you need some support or even someone to talk to because of your Epilepsy then Epilepsy Scotland is definitely the place to go.
I’d say keep strong and don’t let anyone let you feel like you can’t do something or anything just because you have this disability.
I would also like to give a big thanks to Epilepsy Scotland because without you guys I don’t think I would be as far as I am.
