Following a seizure during his first university exam, Bryan was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour. He recovered well following operations, however, status epilepticus resulted in a number of ICU admissions in 2017-2021.

Appointed to the board of Epilepsy Scotland in 2020, Bryan is a Chartered Secretary and Governance Professional. He is the Company Secretary of a financial services mutual group that supports and protects healthcare professionals throughout their career.

Bryan has been a trustee of a number of charities, including most recently ICUsteps, the intensive care patient support charity.

He plays squash and table tennis, enjoys the theatre and festivals, and is an amateur photographer.
