Seizure Triggers

There are certain things which can make people with epilepsy more likely to have a seizure.  These are called seizure triggers and include:

  • missing medication
  • feeling ill or hot
  • stress
  • lack of sleep
  • too much alcohol
  • menstruation (monthly period).

A small number of people with epilepsy (less than 5%) have their seizures triggered by flashing or flickering lights.  This is called photosensitive epilepsy.  The TV is the most common trigger for people with this kind of epilepsy.  See our ‘Photosensitive epilepsy’ factsheet for more information.

Keep a diary of your seizures.  This can help to work out any triggers.  Call our Helpline on 0808 800 2200 for a seizure diary.
