Women and Epilepsy

‘A woman’s guide to epilepsy’ leaflet contains information on issues specific to women with epilepsy. Please call 0808 800 2 200 for a copy.

Women also need to be aware that some antiepileptic medications can interfere with the contraceptive pill. Call 0808 800 2 200 for more information or speak to your doctor or epilepsy nurse.

Pre-conception counselling for women with epilepsy is important as some antiepileptic medication can slightly increase the risk of birth defects.

If you are already pregnant do not panic. Make an appointment to see your doctor to discuss the issues as soon as possible. Do not stop taking your epilepsy medication without medical advice.

Some epilepsy drugs have a lower risk than others, so a planned pregnancy gives time to discuss the most suitable medication with a doctor or epilepsy specialist nurse. Women with epilepsy are recommended to take 5mg of folic acid prior to conception and for the first three months of pregnancy.

The UK and epilepsy pregnancy register are asking all women with epilepsy who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant to contact them on 0800 389 1248. They are collecting information on women's experiences of epilepsy and pregnancy.
