Policy Work : Work Together

Managed Clinical Networks (MCNs)

MCNs were set up in response to the Scottish Acute Services Review in 1998 and in Our National Health: A plan for action, a plan for change (2002), it was recognised that MCNs had the potential to improve services for those suffering from chronic conditions.

MCNs have been defined as “linked groups of health professionals and organisations from primary, secondary and tertiary care, working in a co-ordinated manner, unconstrained by existing professional and Health Board boundaries, to ensure equitable provision of high quality clinically effective services throughout Scotland".

Currently there are 3 MCNs for Epilepsy in Scotland; the North of Scotland MCN, the West of Scotland and Tayside MCN, and the national Paediatric MCN.

Epilepsy Scotland is an active member of all MCN Steering Groups as well as of several sub-groups. As an organisation independent of the NHS we aim to provide a consistent national voice for people affected by epilepsy.
