Epilepsy in Later Life: Guiding Good Practice
Wednesday 17 September 2008 Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, 9 Queen Street, Edinburgh
Epilepsy in later life is a growing worldwide challenge; as the population ages, the prevalence of epilepsy increases. In addition, the diagnosis of epilepsy can be difficult and often delayed in this group. Seizures may occur without any witness present which makes accurate diagnosis more difficult. Treatment also presents further challenges with respect to the physiological changes associated with aging and the increased risk of toxicity from drug-drug interactions.
The aim of this conference is to bring together clinicians who encounter older patients with proven or suspected epilepsy and gather feedback on proposed guidance for the diagnosis, referral and management of people with epilepsy in later life. This feedback will help to shape the final content of the resulting Good Practice Guide.
The sessions will look in detail at the clinical presentation, investigation and treatment of people with epilepsy in later life. There will also be a session looking specifically at the current and optimal referral pathways for patients with suspected epilepsy in Scotland. Sessions will be interactive and delegates will be asked to provide feedback on the recommendations for inclusion in the final Good Practice Guide.
The conference will be chaired by Dr Aileen Keel and Dr Andrew Elder.
Confirmed speakers include: Professor Martin Brodie, Dr Susan Duncan, Dr Damien Reid, Dr Rod Duncan, Professor Martin Dennis, Dr Linda Gerrie and Dr Andrew Elder.
A registration form is available from here.
