Position Statement

Keppra and the Scottish Medicines Consortium

Scottish Medicines Consortium has issued guidance today restricting the use of Keppra in Scotland.  The Scottish Medicines Consortium advises NHS health boards on the licensing status and cost effectiveness of new medications.

Keppra has already been licenced for use in epilepsy and this has not changed.  The SMC offer guidance to GPs and prescribing doctors.  However, GPs can still prescribe any medication appropriate for patients.  Keppra is still available and people who are already prescribed the drug should continue to get Keppra.  If you are prescribed Keppra please continue to take it and call us on 0808 800 2200 if you have any problems.

The drug company who make Keppra are working with the SMC to change this decision.

See our treatment factsheet for more information. If you would like more information please call our freephone Helpline on 0808 800 2200.
