Added: 4 March 2016, 15:47

 Epilepsy Scotland Advance Press Release:

Friday 4 March 2016 for Wednesday 9 March 2016

Media Invitation

Discover why a unique collaboration to deliver improved health services for patients in Dumfries and Galloway could become a blueprint for the rest of Scotland

What is it?    Discover how over 1,200 adults with epilepsy in Dumfries and Galloway are now getting help from a local Epilepsy Specialist Nurse (ESN) instead of travelling miles to other health boards.  This is due to a successful new funding model of healthcare devised by Epilepsy Scotland as part of a unique three year collaboration with the NHS and pharmaceutical companies UCB Pharma and GSK.

When and where is it? The outcomes of the innovative project report (A Cross-Sector Joint Working Model to Evaluate and improve Services for People with Epilepsy in the Dumfries and Galloway Health Board will be shared with MSPs, health professionals and other guests on Wednesday 9 March at 6pm in the Scottish Parliament at the Epilepsy Services in Scotland – a Blueprint for Success reception in the Members’ Room.

Why does it matter?  Epilepsy affects more people in Scotland (55,000) than type-one diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and HIV combined.  Over a thousand people in Dumfries and Galloway now have a better quality of care and direct access to local epilepsy services which the NHS board outsourced before.  A new ESN post has been created thanks to this novel business healthcare model.

Photo opportunity?  Yes at 6pm to photograph guest speakers Chief Executive Lesslie Young (Epilepsy Scotland), Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health Jamie Hepburn, and Elena Coward (UCB Pharma).  Speeches begin at 6.05pm with the Minister speaking at 6.15pm. The event is hosted by Kenneth Gibson MSP.  If you wish to attend the event and do not already have a media pass, please contact Public Affairs Officer Allana Parker by Tuesday 8 March.
