Perampanel and the oral contraceptive

Perampanel and the oral contraceptive

Added: 6 January 2015, 10:31

A new study published in the journal Epilepsia has found that higher doses of perampanel (Fycompa) can reduce the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill. This could increase the chance of an unplanned pregnancy.  If you are taking both perampanel and a hormonal contraceptive, you should speak to your GP, regardless of the dose.  There are a number of other anti-epileptic drugs that can also reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.  For more information see our factsheet ‘Women and hormones’ or speak to your GP or epilepsy specialist.
