Epilepsy Scotland wants to challenge employment discrimination and the social stigma that can be linked with epilepsy. We now offer every Scottish employer a free best practice certificate which shows an employer's commitment to supporting an employee who develops or has epilepsy. Our certificate acknowledges an organisation's policies and practices which are in line with the Equality Act. The simple application form has a short tick list of the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ which match current legal requirements and best practice guidelines for supporting an employee with epilepsy. The certificate runs for 12 months and can be renewed if your organisation continues to meet the required criteria.
One in 97 people in Scotland will develop epilepsy during their lifetime, including those of working age. Even if no employee has epilepsy at the moment, you can still apply for a free best practice certificate. It will demonstrate that your organisation is ready to recruit, develop and invest in someone with this common neurological condition. This clear and positive message about epilepsy can take pride of place in your workplace.
